School Board Honors 39 Retiring Employees

Over dinner of roast beef and parsleyed potatoes Tuesday, 39 Loudoun County school employees who will retire next month were feted by the School Board.

Matthew Britt, assistant superintendent for personnel, summarized each retiree's career with the school district at the dinner, which was held in the Loudoun County High School cafeteria. The retiring employees are teachers, secretaries, custodians, cafeteria workers, instructional aides and others.

Five of the employees were honored at another ceremony later that evening, which recognized the 73 Loudoun County school employees who have worked in the district for 25, 30 and 35 years.

Lucketts Ruritan Club Celebrates Its 20th Year

The Lucketts Ruritan Club celebrated its 20th year of community service at its monthly meeting May 11. A special meal was served by the Furnace Mountain Chapel Ladies' Circle, and a cake was cut by the club's founding president, John Adams, assisted by Bill Harrison, of the Hamilton Club. The Hamilton Ruritan Club sponsored the chartering of the Lucketts Club on May 9, 1979.

The Lucketts club has worked on such projects as saving the old Lucketts Elementary School from demolition and converting it to a community center, creating a scholarship program for high school seniors and reducing roadside trash.

Arts Council Publishes Its Annual Directory

The 1999-2000 Loudoun Arts Directory is now available from the Loudoun Arts Council. The directory lists 30 arts venues in Loudoun County, 61 arts organizations and 147 individual artists, all making up the majority of those creating or presenting arts in Loudoun.

Bluemont Concert Series Names Coordinators

Bluemont Concert Series has announced the names of several summer coordinators: for Loudoun County, Maggie Burkhart, of Leesburg, who can be reached at 703-729-7763; for Middleburg, Tucker Withers, of Aldie, who can be reached at 703-327-4206; for Fauquier County, Elizabeth Buyna, of Warrenton, who can be reached at 540-347-3718.

Bluemont depends on volunteers throughout the year but particularly during the summer. Volunteers help with performer hospitality, office projects, benefit performances, setting up the concert area and sound and lighting systems.

Middleburg Library Board Awards Two Scholarships

The Middleburg Library Advisory Board has announced the winners of its 1999 scholarship competition. The two students selected to receive the $250 awards are Gwendolyn Godfrey, of Philomont, and Jessica Jackson, of St. Louis.

Both are seniors at Loudoun Valley High School. Godfrey will attend the University of Virginia, and Jackson will study at Lynchburg College.

This is the first year the board has awarded scholarships, which are given as a credit at the students' college bookstores. Students were asked to identify their favorite book and describe their academic aspirations.
