GIRLS SOCCER

Game: West Springfield at Woodbridge

When: Tuesday, 7 p.m.

Records: West Springfield (17-1), Woodbridge (18-0-2)

Of note: Two top-ranked teams in Washington area meet in the quarterfinals thanks to Robinson's 3-2 upset of No. 1 West Springfield in Northern Region final. The Spartans' defense, which had allowed only two goals all season before Friday's loss, will be tested by a Vikings squad that has scored 98 goals this season. The Vikings, meanwhile, have given up only 10 goals this season. "Our defense is overlooked," Woodbridge Coach Mike Yeatts said, "and their attack is overlooked quite a bit. Their attack is the best in the area.". . . Woodbridge defender Casey Godfrey reinjured a bruised thigh in Friday's Northwestern Region championship victory over Patrick Henry, and Coach Mike Yeatts says she is doubtful for Tuesday's game. . . . Game features a third of this year's All-Met girls soccer team: Woodbridge forwards Caroline Kent and Ann Weaver, and West Springfield's Jennifer Grillo, midfielder, and Emily McArthur, a defender.

Quotable: "To me it doesn't make a difference," Yeatts said about facing West Springfield in the quarterfinals. "To win a state championship, we're going to have to play them sooner or later."

BOYS SOCCER

Game: W.T. Woodson at Hylton

When: Tuesday, 7 p.m.

Records: W.T. Woodson (12-6-1), Hylton (19-1-1)

Of note: Despite being scored on for the first time in 10 games, Hylton won its seventh Northwestern Region championship by beating Albemarle, 3-1, on Friday night. The Bulldogs last had given up a goal on April 26 against Mills Godwin. . . . Hylton, which is after its fourth Virginia AAA state title in school history, must contend with All-Met forward Abe Thompson, who has scored 16 goals despite missing six games because of commitments to the U.S. under-17 national team. Woodson is 10-3 with Thompson, 2-3-1 without him.

BASEBALL

Game: Potomac at Mills Godwin

When: Tuesday, 7 p.m.

Records: Potomac (22-3), Mills Godwin (21-4)

Of note: Mills Godwin won its third straight Central Region title and sixth in eight years with its 5-4 win over Dinwiddie on Friday. . . . One of Mills Godwin's losses was to North Stafford. . . . Potomac last reached the state tournament in 1996, when it lost, 4-2, on its home field to Frank W. Cox in the state championship. . . . Panthers junior Steve Gonzalez went 5 for 9 in the three Northwestern Region tournament games; senior Danny Lopaze drew seven walks and reached base in 10 of his 12 plate appearances. Senior Jose Pabon reached 10 times in 13 at-bats. Junior Derek Daskalakes saw time at third base, shortstop and second base. . . . In the 8-6 loss to George Washington-Danville in the regional final, the Panthers scored three of their first four runs on sacrifice flies. . . . "This [loss] will be erased by tomorrow when we have practice," Pabon said Friday night of the regional final game. "It won't be a second thought for us."

Quotable: "Our goals were to win the regular season, win the district tournament and make it to the finals of the regionals to make sure we were in the state playoffs," said Potomac Coach Mike Covington, in reference to the Panthers still having the chance to win the school's third state title.

CAPTION: Liana Wooten is a key scorer for Woodbridge, which has tallied 98 goals this season.
