The Brentsville boys team finished second at Saturday's Virginia A track and field championships at Virginia Military Institute. The Tigers tied Powell Valley with 40 points, 17 1/2 points behind state champion Essex.

Brentsville, which had finished third at the Region B meet, was led by senior Cedric Ollison, who won the 400 meters in a school-record time of 49.98 seconds.

"We're better in a big team meet than a small team meet," Brentsville Coach Rob Dulin said of the Tigers' performance at states, the best track finish by the boys team in school history.

At bigger meets, Dulin said, strength at the top of an event is most important, and the Tigers backed that up, adding three second-place finishes and a third to Ollison's victory.

"We have both depth and strength up top," Dulin said, "but what wins is big points."

Junior David Aleman set a school record in the 1,600, finishing second in 4:31.65. The 4x400 relay team also set a school record (3:31.8) with its second-place finish.

The Tigers girls team finished 18th with 12 points. New Kent won the girls state title with 69 points.
