A Landover woman who worked as a babysitter for a 3-month-old child has been charged with murder in the death of the infant, Prince George's County police said yesterday.
Police said the child, Angela Marie Nelson, of the 3000 block of Brightseat Road in Landover, was taken to Children's Hospital on May 21 after showing signs of "shaken-baby syndrome."
The infant died May 28 as a result of her injuries, police said. That same day, the child's babysitter, Tiwina Schuler, 27, also of the 3000 block of Brightseat Road, was charged with second-degree murder after the Maryland chief medical examiner ruled the death a homicide, police said.
Schuler is being held without bond in the Prince George's County jail, police said.
Police said the baby was injured while under Schuler's care at the babysitter's apartment. They declined to provide a motive for the crime or to release other details.
Angela Marie's funeral is scheduled for Friday, said Barbara Metcalf, a friend of the family's. Metcalf said yesterday that Schuler was the child's regular babysitter as well as a friend of the baby's mother.
Metcalf said the family was too distraught to talk and was still searching for answers. "Why kill a child?" she said. "That baby won't see a junior prom or a high school graduation or anything else now. Nobody can understand it."
