Highlights: Six-time state champ in girls pole vault (indoor and outdoor) and five-time All-Met. Was rated eighth in the nation during the indoor season.
Notable: Will be jumping in the National Scholastic Outdoor meet in Raleigh, N.C., this weekend and at the Junior Nationals in Denton, Tex., next weekend. Has signed a letter-of-intent to attend the University of Tennessee on a track scholarship, which is for 50 percent of tuition and fees/room and board/books. It is subject to increase as her performance level increases. Started jumping with -- and against -- the boys in the conference because pole vaulting did not become an official Southern Maryland Athletic Conference event for girls until midway through her freshman year.
Personal: Plans to major in physical therapy or some sports/exercise science related field. Her father, Robert, was a high school and college pole vaulter.
ST. MARY'S RYKEN
Class: Junior in the fall
Highlights: Was the Knights' No. 1 seed throughout the 1998 season. Had the lowest scoring average in the SMAC (39) as the team went 24-0 and won the conference championship. Finished in a tie for first in the St. Mary's County tournament last year, and placed seventh in the SMAC tournament.
Notable: Secured a spot at the Maryland-South Delaware District of Optimist International Golf Tournament (June 21) by winning the 16-18 boys title on the first stop of the Southern Maryland Optimist Junior Golf Championships, held May 27. On Tuesday, he shot a 35 at Breton Bay to win Leg 3. Playing in a total of 20 tournaments this summer, including stops on the Titleist Junior Tour of Maryland and Virginia.
Personal: Works in the pro shop at Potomac Ridge Golf Links (formerly Southview). Maintains a 4.3 grade-point average at Ryken, where he also is an outfielder on the baseball team.
