Student School Board Member Elected
Reid Voss, a senior at J.E.B. Stuart High School, has been elected the new student representative to the Fairfax County School Board.
Students selected Voss to represent them in a May election.
Voss, who is active in a variety of activities, including crew, wrestling and Future Business Leaders of America, said he intends to focus on the issues of a later high school starting time and determining where the money that students pay for parking permits goes.
Voss replaces Herndon High senior Wesley Hottot. The student representative sits with the School Board at meetings and participates in discussion but has no vote. Voss will serve a one-year term beginning July 1.
Ceremony to Dedicate Trail Underpass
Saturday's opening of a new underpass for hikers, bikers and equestrians using the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park Trail at Reston Parkway will be celebrated by local officials and trail enthusiasts with a dedication ceremony at 10 a.m.
The Reston Trail Safety Expo, sponsored by the Friends of the W&OD Trail, also begins at 10 a.m. and will run until 2 p.m. adjacent to the underpass. It will feature exhibitors offering safety tips, safety checks and displays of equipment for cyclists, walkers, joggers, equestrians and in-line skaters.
The arched-concrete underpass is 55 feet wide and 15 feet high, giving trail-users a safe, lighted route under heavy motor traffic at Reston Parkway. From the parkway, it is located between the Reston Town Center Shopping Center and the Dulles Toll Road. The underpass was built by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority.
