Christopher Allen, 37, who had lived in the Washington area from 1985 to 1995, spending the last two of those years as communications director for Sen. Paul Coverdell (R-Ga.), died of cancer June 25 at a hospital in Chicago.

Mr. Allen, who lived in Chicago, was a former resident of the District and Arlington. From 1985 to 1988, he was public affairs director of the Hariri Foundation and then media relations manager for the National Alliance of Business until 1990.

After serving as an aide to Labor Secretary Lynn Martin in 1991 and 1992, he was a deputy assistant trade representative in the office of Carla A. Hills in 1992 and 1993. He then joined Coverdell's office.

Mr. Allen, a native of Charlotte, was a 1983 graduate of the University of Illinois. He began his career in politics in Chicago as a press aide to then-Sen. Charles H. Percy (R-Ill.) in 1984.

After returning to Illinois in 1995, he spent three years as communications director for Illinois Lt. Gov. Bob Kustra (R). Since earlier this year, he had served as public information officer for the U.S. District Court for Northern Illinois.

His marriage to Beth Allen ended in divorce.

Survivors include his parents, Harry and Alice Allen of Marietta, Ga.; a brother; and a sister.
