New Entrance at State Park Approved

Road improvements at Smallwood State Park near Marbury were approved last week by the state Board of Public Works.

The board, which must approve all major state construction projects, awarded a $429,000 contract to a Howard County firm to build a 3,000-foot park entrance road off Maryland Route 224. The entrance will have a contact station, security gates, lighting and landscaping.

The 629-acre Smallwood State Park is the site of the restored estate of William Smallwood, who was a general in the Revolutionary War and served as Maryland governor.

Children's Aid Auction Is Aug. 14

The Charles County Children's Aid Society Inc. has scheduled its annual Dinner-Auction for Aug. 14 at the Jaycees Hall in Waldorf.

Browsing of items for sale will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and the auction starting at 8 p.m. Tickets for the fund-raising event are $30. Hosts Sought for AIDS Discussions

The Charles County Health Department is offering to make presentations on AIDS and HIV, and the agency is seeking individuals to host such discussions in their homes.

The program, called Project HOPE (Home Outreach Prevention Education), presents information on how AIDS and HIV have affected the community and about ways to prevent further spread of the disease.

Calverton School Raises $73,000

The Calverton School raised more than $73,000 at its annual benefit auction, which featured items ranging from Orioles tickets to stays at a Jamaican resort. The money will be divided between the school's arts and athletics departments.

Junior Naval Academy Reunion Planned

Reunion organizers are looking for alumni of the Leonard Hall Junior Naval Academy. They are planning a celebration to mark the school's 90th anniversary on Sept. 19.

Volunteers Needed to Adopt Roads

The St. Mary's County Public Works Department is seeking individuals, businesses, churches, civic groups and other organizations to help keep roadsides clean by participating in the Adopt a County Road program.

Volunteers are supplied with orange safety vests, caps, litter getters and bags. Groups that adopt a road are named on signs posted along the stretch they clean up.

Work to Close Part of St. Paul's Drive

Westbound St. Paul's Drive in Waldorf will be closed July 19 to 23 for utility construction work between Allward Drive and St. Charles Parkway, the Charles County Planning and Growth Management Department announced this week.

Signs will be posted in the area of the closure, which could be postponed if weather conditions delay construction.
