Libraries Get New Computer System
Beginning Monday, Montgomery County public library patrons must show library cards to check out materials until the transition to a new computer system is completed July 24.
During the two-week period, checkout information will not be available by computer, library staff won't have access to existing borrowers' records, fines and fees will not be collected and the automated phone renewal system will be down.
Customers can still check out, return and renew most materials, get new library cards and get assistance locating materials.
For questions about library services during the transition period, contact your local library.
Quince Orchard Library in New Hands
Its projected opening date now past, the Quince Orchard Library construction project in Gaithersburg is in the hands of a surety contractor, who plans to complete it by Aug. 31. Then, the library staff will take five to seven weeks to move in.
The delay is the result of a construction company's default on its contract with the county four months before the promised June opening date. Earlier delays were caused by site problems and winter precipitation.
"We sincerely regret the delays that have plagued the project," said Harriet Henderson, director of the Montgomery County Department of Public Libraries, in a statement.
The 17,500-square-foot structure at 15831 Quince Orchard Rd. awaits installation of its heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system, ceiling tiles, lighting, carpeting, shelves and paint. When finished, it will house a collection of more than 100,000 items for children and adults, and it also will include a quiet study room, a children's discovery room and a large meeting room.
