Mary Drennan Gass
Mary Drennan Gass, 93, a longtime Chevy Chase resident and retired secretary at the Smithsonian Institution, died July 8 of pneumonia at the Manor Care nursing home in Chevy Chase.
Mrs. Gass, a native of Callison, S.C., came to the Washington area in the 1920s and started work at the Smithsonian in 1924. She worked as a secretary to top officers of the Smithsonian and specialized in translating documents from foreign languages. She retired in the 1960s.
Mrs. Gass was a member of the Women's Club of Chevy Chase and Chevy Chase Baptist Church. She volunteered for the Alliance for the Mentally Ill and other organizations doing advocacy for the mentally ill.
Her husband, Wilbur Gass, died in 1993.
Survivors include a daughter, Caroline Marie Gass of Sykesville.
Thelma M. Sager
Thelma M. Sager, 76, a lifelong Washington resident and retired medical assistant, died of a heart attack at D.C. General Hospital on July 2.
Ms. Sager, a native Washingtonian, worked as a medical assistant in the practice of Herbert Gates, a general practitioner, until his death in 1980. She continued to work as a resident manager of the Wiltshire apartment building on East Capitol Street until her death.
Survivors include two sisters, Margaret Bragaw of Kansas and Catherine Thompson of Solomons.
