WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCES BETWEEN COLLEGE AND HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL?
"It's a whole other level. At the beginning of the season, I didn't even feel like I belonged on the team. The pitching is much better, everybody is faster, and the ball goes much faster."
HOW MUCH TIME DOES COLLEGE BASEBALL TAKE UP?
"We play pretty much year-round, and we're doing something baseball-related basically every day. Academics are at another level at college, too, and it's sometimes really tough to find time to do my studies well. Most of the free time I have that I should be studying I spend either playing baseball, doing something for the school military-wise or trying to relax."
WHAT'S YOUR ROUTINE ON YOUR TYPICAL SPRING DAY?
"I wake up at 6:50, we all go to roll call and breakfast at 7. Then we all go to class, because they schedule all the baseball players' classes before noon. After that, I'm pretty much down at the baseball field until 5 or 6 unless we have a game. Then we eat dinner together, and it's time to study for the next day's class or a test coming up."
IS ALL YOUR FREE TIME OCCUPIED BY BASEBALL AND STUDYING?
"I think most college students have more free time than they're used to, but when I got down there, I found out that there really isn't that much free time, and I took some time out of studying to have fun."
HAS IT EVER CROSSED YOUR MIND THAT THE TIME COMMITMENT FOR BASEBALL MIGHT BE TOO MUCH?
"That's not something that has ever gone through my mind. Without baseball it would have been a lot tougher to get through my freshman year at VMI. All of my best friends were on the baseball team with me, and I have fun every time I'm out there."
DO YOU HAVE PLANS TO PLAY AFTER COLLEGE?
"That's every ballplayer's dream, and if the opportunity comes, I'll probably take it. It's something that I feel like I have a decent shot at, but I went to VMI for the job opportunities afterward just as much as baseball."
