Dead Trucker Was Shot, Police Say

Prince William County police said yesterday that a Missouri man who was found dead two weeks ago in the cab of his parked tractor-trailer along an industrial strip in Woodbridge died as a result of a gunshot wound to the upper body.

On July 6, police found Vernon Nielson, 69, of Springfield, Mo., dead in the sleeping area of his truck, which was parked and running on the side of Farm Creek Drive. Nielsen had been scheduled to deliver household goods to a Woodbridge company early that morning but never arrived. Police said Nielsen probably arrived early and was sleeping at the side of the road. Police have not indicated a possible motive for the slaying and have not named any suspects. Police spokesman Dennis Mangan said detectives are continuing to investigate the case and are searching for witnesses who may have seen the truck in the early morning hours of July 6.

3 Indicted in Capitol Heights Killing

A Prince George's County grand jury has indicted three men on murder and other charges in the June 15 death of a Capitol Heights woman who was killed by a stray bullet as she hung curtains in her home.

Keith Arnez Boone, 21, Ronald Rice Sr., 59, and Ronald Rice Jr., 33, were each indicted on charges of murder, attempted murder, first degree assault and two counts of use of a handgun in commission of a felony or crime of violence in the fatal shooting of Dona Elizabeth Ferguson, 40, a mother of five.

Prosecutors assert that Boone fired at a man who had fought with the younger Rice earlier in the day. The shot missed the intended target and hit Ferguson, according to prosecutors and statements filed in court. At the time of the slaying, Boone was serving a one-year home detention sentence after a January conviction for cocaine possession.
