Less than 24 hours before Sunday's 14th annual Charles County Swimming Championships, Scott Seymour and his teammates on the Indian Head Swim Team got a preview of things to come.

They posted a dual-meet victory over their chief competition, Smallwood Village Swim Club, on Saturday, when Seymour swam a personal best time of 26.84 seconds to win the 50-meter freestyle in the boys 13-14 age group.

Although he did not improve on that time Sunday, Seymour set the only meet record of the day when he won the 50 freestyle in 27.40 seconds, and Indian Head easily captured its second consecutive county title.

Seymour and teammates Brennan Baffer, Jessica Huss and Erica Hamor each won three individual races and helped Indian Head sweep all three relay events en route to scoring 367 points -- the second-highest total in meet history and most since 1990, when Hawthorne won with 368.

"We are a young team and we didn't think it was going to be very easy," Seymour said of the overwhelming 98-point margin of victory over second-place Smallwood. "Our 15-18 swimmers are good, but we don't have a lot of them, so we thought other teams might beat us out. But in the end they didn't.

Smallwood, paced by triple winners Ethan Ratliff and Shannon Flores, was the meet's runner-up for the third time in four years, finishing with 269 points. Westlake placed third with 184, followed by Bannister (183) and Hawthorne (77).

After winning the 50 freestyle by more than two seconds, Seymour edged Smallwood's Derik Holley in the 50 breaststroke by less than a second, then defeated Holley again in the 100 IM.

Baffer, who competed in the 8-and-under age group, attributed his victories to "imagining myself being the winner" and lots of practice.

"I practiced in Boston, I practiced in Key West, and I practice here," Baffer said, referring to his family's previous residences. With a parent in the Air Force, Baffer's family may move frequently, but he swims even more often and said he uses swimming to make new friends at each new home. Although, he admits, "I can never remember my phone number."

He had a day to remember Sunday when he won the 8-and-under 25 freestyle and 25 breaststroke and the 10-and-under 50 butterfly. His older brother, Brian Baffer, won the 50 freestyle and 100 IM and placed second in the 50 breaststroke in the 11-12 age division. Brady Baffer placed third in the 8-and-under 25 backstroke and fifth in both the 25 freestyle and 25 breaststroke. Brittany Baffer placed second in the 11-12 50 freestyle and fourth in the 50 butterfly.

Huss said it was "my hard work and my spirit" that helped her to win the 8-and-under 25 freestyle, 25 breaststroke and 25 backstroke. Huss, born in Maryland, began swimming while her family lived in Hawaii for more than three years. They moved back to the Washington area when she was 4 years old. She commutes from Annapolis to swim with Indian Head.

Hamor won the butterfly, freestyle and breaststroke in the 9-10 age group, while her sister, Heather Hamor, was a double winner in the 13-14 division -- winning the 50 freestyle and the 100 IM. Erin Gilroy, who competed in the 15-18 age group, also won two races for Indian Head, whose coach, Sharon Hile, said it was a team effort and tremendous depth that produced the victory.

"We have at least two strong swimmers in every event and we are really strong in our [younger] age brackets," Hile said. But "we didn't expect to win by that much."
