Lady Cougars Stopped In Basketball Competition

The Beltway Lady Cougars went 3-2 but failed to make it out of pool play last week in the under-15 U.S. Junior National Tournament held in the District. The Lady Cougars beat the Long Island Silver Bullets, New Jersey Rising Stars and West Massachusetts Cheetahs, but lost to the New Hampshire Crusaders and Lehigh Valley (Pa.)

Coach Lester Butler said Candance Howard, a sophomore at Bladensburg High, and juniors Lynette O'Reggio (Elizabeth Seton) and Raven Mallard (Riverdale Baptist) were among the team's top players. But a lack of consistency prevented the Lady Cougars from advancing.

"They all played well off and on," Butler said. "I don't think we played good defense. They all played well at times, but we just didn't play well as a group that particular day, especially from a defensive standpoint."

E. Seton Newcomers Stand Out as All-Stars

Elizabeth Seton's two representatives in the Reebok League All-Star Game last week at High Point were a pair of newcomers to the Bladensburg school's basketball roster: center Erica Pollock and guard Cotelia Bond-Young. Pollock is a freshman; Bond-Young, a sophomore, is transferring to Seton from Douglass.
