The son of a Prince William County police accident investigator died last weekend after his pickup overturned on Interstate 66 in Warren County, Va.

Joseph William Scalici, 24, of Nokesville, was pronounced dead at Inova Fairfax Hospital at 7 a.m. Saturday after his Ford F-150 pickup veered off the road and overturned, trapping him and two passengers inside, said Lucy Caldwell, Virginia State Police spokeswoman. Scalici was the son of Joe Scalici, a longtime traffic accident investigator with Prince William County police.

Police found Joseph Scalici's truck about 4:30 a.m. Saturday off the side of the eastbound lanes of I-66. Caldwell said Scalici's two passengers, ages 24 and 26, were slightly injured but were able to walk away from the accident.

Caldwell said that the group had been heading home from a trip to West Virginia nightclubs and that police think Scalici fell asleep at the wheel. Scalici was the designated driver and had been awake for nearly 24 hours before the crash, Caldwell said.

"It doesn't appear that he was impaired [by alcohol] at the time of the accident, but he may have been drinking earlier," Caldwell said.

Scalici's funeral was held yesterday in Manassas.
