A Spotsylvania County man was charged today with attempted abduction after a woman reported that someone reached into her car and tried to grab her, Sheriff Ron Knight said. Authorities said they were trying to determine whether there was any link to other cases in the area.
Knight said the 27-year-old woman was stopped at a traffic light just before 1 a.m. today when a white van pulled up behind her with its lights flashing. The woman sped away after a man got out of the van, ran up to the passenger door and reached inside, Knight said.
Travis Lee Luttrell, 29, was later arrested and charged with attempted abduction, authorities said. They said a companion, Michael Perrie, 38, was charged with public intoxication.
Knight said that because a white van was involved, authorities are investigating whether there was any connection to high-profile cases in the area. Investigators have said a white van was spotted near the home of Kristin and Kati Lisk about the time they disappeared in May 1997. Kristin, 15, and Kati, 12, were found dead five days later.
Investigators believe the girls' killer is responsible for the September 1996 abduction and slaying of Sofia Silva, 16.
