The best man at a wedding was killed in a drive-by shooting in Southeast Washington last night, moments after he had driven other guests home, police said. A woman who was with the man was wounded.
DeWayne Shorter, 31, of the 5500 block of Marlboro Pike in District Heights, had just let at least three other wedding guests out of his car in the 1100 block of Mississippi Avenue SE about 6:45 p.m. when two vehicles drove by and shots were fired, said Sgt. Joe Gentile, a D.C. police spokesman.
Police Capt. Michael L. Anzallo identified Shorter as best man, but other details of the ceremony were not immediately available. Anzallo said the other guests were either in or just entering their apartment house when the shooting began. One neighbor said he heard as many as 10 or 12 shots.
"There were a lot," Anzallo said. "It happened pretty quickly."
Shorter was hit in the chest, back and head and was pronounced dead shortly after he was brought to D.C. General Hospital, said hospital spokesman Leo Alexander.
The woman who was with him was hit in a leg and was in stable condition, Alexander said. Authorities said she is 30 years old, but police withheld her name because they said she is a witness.
Police declined to discuss a motive in the attack.
