Ever wonder about what's being built -- or what a developer proposes to build -- on the vacant land around the corner? This feature is intended to provide an easy way for you to learn about planned development throughout St. Mary's County.

Using information provided by the St. Mary's County Department of Planning and Zoning, and the Leonardtown Planning and Zoning Commission, Southern Maryland Extra gives you a monthly update on planned subdivisions, office buildings, shopping centers and other development. The map and chart identify planned projects that were processed by officials in July.

The status of the projects is described in three categories:

Projects Proposed, Preliminary Plans/Site Plans/Concept Plans Proposed are residential, commercial or industrial projects submitted for approval. Public hearings are held before any action by the Planning Commission.

Projects Approved, Preliminary Plans/Site Plans Approved are residential, commercial or industrial projects approved by the Planning Commission for development of land.

Building Permits allow a property owner to begin clearing or grading land for construction.

CALIFORNIA AREA

1. FRIENDLY'S RESTAURANT, Route 235, east of Route 4. A concept development plan for construction of a restaurant on 1.2 acres, at First Colony Center.

CALLAWAY AREA

2. CALLAWAY MARKETPLACE, Route 5, west of Route 249. A concept development site plan for a 97,733-square-foot retail center on 17.6 acres.

GREAT MILLS AREA

3. WOODS AND STREAM HOMES, Route 237, north of Route 246. A concept development site plan for subdivision of 41.823 acres for 48 single-family houses and 32 town house units.

4. CECIL'S MILL, Route 246, north of Route 5. A concept development plan for a 122-lot subdivision for single-family houses on 61 acres.

LEXINGTON PARK AREA

5. PEMBROOKE, PHASE I, Willows Road, south of Bradley Boulevard. A preliminary plan to subdivide 207.90 acres into 149 lots for single-family houses.

PARK HALL AREA

6. ST. JAMES SUBDIVISION II, southwest corner of Route 235 and Mattapany Road. Final approval to subdivide 102.3 acres into 30 lots for single-family houses.

7. FIRST COLONY, south on Route 235 past Route 4 on the right. A permit to construct a 124,230-square-foot Target retail store on 219.88 acres.

8. TOOT'S BAR, Mervell Dean Road, off Route 235. A permit for construction of a deck addition to an existing bar on one acre.

CHARLOTTE HALL

9. BRINSFIELD-ECHOLS FUNERAL HOME, Route 5 at Oaks Road. A permit for demolition of existing building and construction of new funeral home on 2.401 acres.

GREAT MILLS AREA

10. BRASS RAIL TAVERN, Flat Iron Road and Indian Bridge Road. A permit for construction of a 4,896-square-foot banquet room addition to an existing tavern on 4.66 acres.

11. HOLY FACE CHURCH, Route 5, west of Route 246. A permit for placement of two modular classrooms on 22.4 acres at Little Flower School.

LEONARDTOWN AREA

12. ST. MARY'S RYKEN HIGH SCHOOL, Camp Calvert Road, south of Route 5. A permit for construction a 25,000-square-foot Fine Arts Center on 105.33 acres.
