Vincent E. Mumford, a former director of intercollegiate athletics at Baltimore City Community College, will return to the Maryland Juco Athletic Conference in the same capacity at Charles County Community College.
Mumford, 34, was the assistant athletic director at Tennessee State in 1998-99 and took over the Charles County athletic department July 19. This is the school's final year before it merges with Calvert County and St. Mary's County community colleges to form the College of Southern Maryland.
"This is a good move for me," said Mumford, who is from Delaware and got his bachelor's degree and a PhD in education leadership from the University of Delaware. "It offers a number of things. It puts me back into a conference I'm very familiar with and puts me closer to my family."
The Charles County program he has inherited boasts nine intercollegiate varsity teams, including the regional champion softball squad and the men's soccer state titlist.
Mumford has experience in raising scholarship money and hopes to put that to good use in order to take the Charles County program "to the next level."
"We're very limited on the number of kids we can bring in on scholarship," Mumford said. "I'd like to see that increase."
He also hopes to add women's basketball to the program.
"I believe in opportunity," he said. "Every opportunity I get to add more sports, I will. As many as possible."
