In Charles County

Ever wonder about what's being built -- or what a developer proposes to build -- on the vacant land around the corner? This feature is intended to provide an easy way for you to learn about planned development throughout Charles County.

Using information provided by the Charles County Department of Planning and Growth Management, and the town of La Plata zoning office, Southern Maryland Extra gives you a monthly update on planned subdivisions, office buildings, shopping centers and other development. The map and chart identify by districts planned projects that were processed by officials in July.

The status of the projects is described in three categories:

Projects Proposed, Preliminary Plans/Site Plans Proposed are residential, commercial or industrial projects submitted for approval. Public meetings are held before any action by the Planning Commission.

Projects Approved, Preliminary Plans/Site Plans Approved are residential, commercial or industrial projects approved by the county or incorporated towns for development of land.

Development Services Permits allow a property owner to begin clearing or grading land for construction.

Projects Proposed


1. ARIKATO FITNESS CENTER, 2298 Old Washington Rd. A site plan for construction of a fitness spa and accupressure massage center.

2. BUDGET SECURITY MINI STORAGE, 2298 Old Washington Rd. A site plan for construction of a mini storage facility.

3. WALDORF MARKETPLACE, southeast corner of Route 228 and Western Parkway. A preliminary site plan for construction of a commercial building.

Projects Approved


4. SOMERSET HOMES, Route 301 and Irving Road. A site plan for construction company headquarters on 8.5702 acres.


5. PLANTATION PINES, St. Peters Church Road. A preliminary plan for subdivision of 132.2 acres into 44 residential lots for single-family houses.


6. LA PLATA POST OFFICE, Centennial Street. Grading has begun for construction of a new post office building on approximately three acres.

7. NORTHCHASE, just north of the Willowgate area on Washington Avenue. A final plat for subdivision of 5.79 acres for 17 lots for single-family houses.


8. PARK PLACE, Industrial Park Drive across from Rockefeller Court. A site development plan for construction of an office building on 3.318 acres.

9. SOUTH POTOMAC CHURCH, Route 301 and Rhodes Drive. A site plan for construction of a church.

10. UNITED ELECTRIC, Route 301 off Couserio Court. A site plan for construction of an electrical warehouse and distribution center.

12. WAWA, Route 228 and Western Parkway. A permit for construction of a food market with 16 fuel bays.
