Starring: WR Jamie Byroads, FB-LB Damian Pettie, OL-DL Chip Williams

Directed By: Andy Palko (15th season)

WHAT'S THE PLOT? The 230-pound Williams leads a talented and experienced offensive line.

Though this year's Braves will be without the flair -- or, as Palko calls it, the "home-run threat" -- that former running back James Garrett (1999 graduate) brought to the field, it looks to be even more productive. One of the keys is the team's size, especially on the offensive line. Williams, a returning all-SMAC and All-Extra selection on both sides of the ball, will be joined in that unit by seniors Brad Cullison and Josh Laster at the two tackle positions and junior Allen Herbert at left guard. Palko's son, Andrew, also returns as the team's starting tight end. Herbert, Laster and Williams all serve double duty on the defensive line, in addition to speedy Tony McGee. Potential replacements for Garrett: junior tailbacks Allen Courtney and David Showalter. Neither poses the same breakaway threat Garrett did, but both are more than capable of gaining ground. Junior fullback Pettie, a transfer from Las Vegas who also will play linebacker, should solidify the backfield. Sophomore Ryan Escolopio and junior Jamar Mason are vying for the starting quarterback job. Mason is pretty much a straight drop-back passer; Escolopio is proving to have more mobility in the pocket. Whoever wins the job will have the luxury of throwing to Byroads, a returning All-Extra performer who had a team-high 450 receiving yards and six touchdowns last season. Byroads ranks among the league's top receivers and also serves as the Braves' punter and place kicker.
