Starring: RB Colbert Barnes, FB-LB Cliff Dukes, DE Roy Olson, DB Jerimiah Porter

Directed By: Bill Greer (third season)

WHAT'S THE PLOT? The Hornets will look to change last season's winless ways without the help of home-field advantage.

Great Mills was not nearly as bad last season as its 0-10 record indicates -- the Hornets lost three games by less than 10 points -- but it was definitely sporadic. Five times Great Mills was held to just six points, and three times it was shut out completely. But the Hornets, who dressed 11 sophomores and 16 juniors on the varsity team last year, lost only five players to graduation. And Greer said the Hornets are more than ready to get the taste of defeat out of their mouths, even though they'll have to get that way on the road -- Great Mills's home field, which was resodded during the summer, will not be ready for play for three or four months. Still, a big reason for optimism is Dukes, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound fullback who already has been offered a scholarship to Michigan State but has not yet committed to any team. Dukes and the speedy-but-tiny Barnes (5-7, 160) form a versatile backfield capable of causing problems. Great Mills also has all five of its starters on the offensive line back this season and each, Greer said, spent quality time in the weight room this summer to bulk up. The linemen average just over 200 pounds. Porter (5-11, 185) and Dukes are the team's top returners on defense, and will be key to eliminating the deep threat again this season. Great Mills is left with a big hole to fill at linebacker with the loss of Darryl Whipple, an all-SMAC selection last year who led the Hornets with 83 tackles, five fumble recoveries and two pass knockdowns.
