Starring: LB Nick Carrington, LB Josh Kiessling, C Eric Simon, RB-CB Travis Woodland

DIRECTED BY: Dave Bradshaw (first season)

WHAT'S THE PLOT? The Rams have good speed and decent size, but lack experience and depth at the skill positions.

Over the past four years, McDonough has lost 16 games by 14 or fewer points, something that, understandably, becomes very frustrating for the players. While Bradshaw knows there is a lot of work to be done, he hopes the many seniors on the roster give the team the experience to help avoid those close losses this season. But the first order of business is for the Rams to find a starting quarterback. Last season, junior Travis Peters (6-0, 170) and senior Marcus Goerdt (5-10, 180) both saw playing time. Although that could be the case again this season, Bradshaw said he plans on naming a starter before the opener against Patuxent. McDonough returns a solid backfield, led by Carrington (5-10, 180) at tailback, Kiessling (5-8, 180) at fullback and Woodland (5-10, 170) at wingback. Carrington is the fastest of the three (4.40 in the 40) but Woodland is not far behind. Woodland also plays cornerback, and Carrington and Kiessling start at linebacker spots. Blocking up front for the Rams are three returning starters -- Simon (5-9, 200) at center and Chris Mitchell (6-1, 250) and Jim Schumacher (6-1, 230) at the two tackle positions. One of the biggest holes to fill is on the other side of the ball, up front defensively. Among those lost to graduation was all-SMAC lineman Sam Williams, who finished last season with a league-high 17 sacks -- including 13 in the final six weeks of the season. To contain the run, some of the young Rams will have to mature quickly.
