Starring: RB Recardo Evans, RB-S Gonzie Gray, QB-DB Nick Rose, OL-DL Randy Starks

Directed By: Dominic Zaccarelli (fifth season)

WHAT'S THE PLOT? The four-time defending SMAC champions, led by speedsters Evans and Gray, show no signs of letting up this season.

The goal for the team this season -- in addition to a fifth straight league title -- will be advancing in the playoffs, where it was ousted in the first round last year in a heart-breaking 22-21 loss to Broadneck. Key for Westlake is the fact that it carries a huge roster and, over the course of the year, is usually able to work a lot of players into the game. But the primary reason for the Wolverines' success has been their speed and execution of the Wing-T offense. Both Gray (5-11, 170) and Evans (5-7, 165) like to run to the corners, and there is no one in the state who can catch either one of them in the open field. The heavily recruited Gray, who also will play cornerback and safety this season, is the defending 3A state champion in the 200 meters and was runner-up in the 100. Evans, who was injured during the state meet, was a half-step faster than Gray in both events at the SMAC championships. Also returning to the backfield is senior Denis Hicks (5-11, 185), who had some quality fourth-quarter runs last season. Rose (5-10, 165) brings a year's worth of experience to the quarterback position, and the 6-4, 280-pound Starks leads a solid offensive line. Westlake lost four all-SMAC performers -- including linebacker Nick Marks, who set a single-season school record with 137 tackles -- from a defensive unit that yielded just 7.7 points per conference game. Players expected to fill the void at linebacker include Evans, senior Mike Mills (5-10, 180) and junior Maurice Smith (5-11, 180).
