Several middle-school children waiting at a Woodbridge bus stop escaped injury when a man wielding a knife chased them Wednesday, Prince William County police said.

Brian M. Luttrell, 22, of 13903 Roanoke St., has been charged with seven counts of assault and being drunk in public in connection with the incident.

The children, who attend Fred Lynn Middle School, were waiting at Mathews Drive and Roanoke Street about 7:30 a.m. when a man who appeared to be drunk came out of his nearby home holding a knife, said Sgt. Kim Chinn, police spokeswoman. Chinn said the man did not speak to the children but instead chased them away.

Chinn said the children ran down the street and told some adults who were in the area about the incident. The adults returned to the bus stop, but the man apparently had gone inside his home, she said.

The bus then arrived and as the children boarded, the man reappeared and chased it, Chinn said. The children told their bus driver, who contacted police.

Officers arrived and found two adults holding the man down, Chinn said. Luttrell was arrested and charged with being drunk in public. He was charged with assault later that day.
