Colonial Forge sophomore fullback Chuck Brown scored the first touchdown in school history, but the Eagles fell just short of recording the school's first victory against visiting Broad Run.
Broad Run senior Josh Null returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown with 2 minutes 55 seconds left in the game to give the Virginia AA school from Ashburn a 26-20 win. It was Broad Run's first victory since Oct. 31, 1997.
Despite the loss, Colonial Forge Coach Karl Buckwalter was pleased with the way his team fought back from a 14-0 deficit and the improvements the Eagles have made since their 58-3 loss to Forestville (Md.) in the season opener.
"The kids got after it, they tackled better--though we still need to work on it--and they played with more emotion," Buckwalter said. "Looking back on my history as a coach, we are leaps and bounds ahead of where we were when I took over the McLean program" in 1990.
Brown scored the school's first touchdown with 2:58 left in the second quarter. On fourth down, freshman quarterback Brandon McKinney hit Brown with a short pass to the left side, and Brown slipped two tackles before reaching the end zone.
Colonial Forge will play at Brentsville at 7:30 p.m. Friday in its last varsity contest of the year. The Eagles will play Commonwealth District junior varsity programs for the remainder of the season.
* STAFFORD 13, OSBOURN PARK 12: Stafford's defense stopped Osbourn Park's two-point conversion attempt with 24 seconds remaining to end a six-game losing streak.
Addam Jordan's second touchdown of the game pulled the Yellow Jackets (1-1) within a point at 13-12. Jordan finished with 90 yards on 17 carries and caught three passes for 54 yards.
Matt Matter returned a blocked punt 47 yards for a touchdown for Stafford (1-1), which also got a one-yard touchdown from quarterback Brad Hayes.
* POSTPONEMENTS: Two area games were postponed because of weather.
Woodbridge (0-2) will host Eleanor Roosevelt (1-0) tonight in a rare 9:15 start. The late start is because of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which ends at sundown tonight. Because Eleanor Roosevelt must travel from Greenbelt to Woodbridge after sundown, the game cannot start until 9:15.
Osbourn (0-1) will play at Stonewall Jackson (0-1) Monday night at 7:30.
