In Charles County

Ever wonder about what's being built -- or what a developer proposes to build -- on the vacant land around the corner? This feature is intended to provide an easy way for you to learn about planned development throughout Charles County.

Using information provided by the Charles County Department of Planning and Growth Management, and the town of La Plata zoning office, Southern Maryland Extra gives you a monthly update on planned subdivisions, office buildings, shopping centers and other development. The map and chart identify by districts planned projects that were processed by officials in August.

The status of the projects is described in three categories:

Projects Proposed, Preliminary Plans/Site Plans Proposed are residential, commercial or industrial projects submitted for approval. Public meetings are held before any action by the Planning Commission.

Projects Approved, Preliminary Plans/Site Plans Approved are residential, commercial or industrial projects approved by the county or incorporated towns for development of land.

Development Services Permits allow a property owner to begin clearing or grading land for construction.

HUGHESVILLE ELECTION DISTRICT

1. ALDRIDGE AUTO SALES, Route 231, east of Leonardtown Road. A site development plan for construction of an auto retail store.

WALDORF ELECTION DISTRICT

2. CHICK-FIL-A RESTAURANT, Route 301 and St. Patricks Drive. A site development plan for construction of a fast-food restaurant.

3. FAIRVIEW CENTER, Route 301 South and Billingsley Road. A site development plan for construction of a 50,000-square-foot grocery store, a 10,125-square-foot pharmacy, a fast-food restaurant that seats 80, and a gas station with convenience store.

HUGHESVILLE ELECTION DISTRICT

4. CONTRACTORS' OFFICE, Hughesville Industrial Park Road, south of Route 231. A site development plan for construction of a contractors' office on 7.02 acres.

POMONKEY ELECTION DISTRICT

5. MONTROSE FARMS, Chapman's Landing Road and Route 210. A preliminary plan to subdivide 7.53 acres into lots for seven single-family houses.

6. ROUTE 210 COMMERCIAL CENTER, Route 210, east of Route 227. A site development plan for construction of an 11,980-square-foot building to include a carry-out, specialty shop, restaurant, and convenience store with fuel sales.

WALDORF ELECTION DISTRICT

7. COUNTY FIRST BANK, Route 925 and Smallwood Drive East. A site development plan for construction of a bank with drive-through.

8. FOREST GROVE CEMETERY, Route 301 and Turkey Hill Road. A site development plan for construction of an office and maintenance building.
