A dozen high school marching bands took the field Saturday evening for the seventh annual Patriot Classic Tournament of Bands at Northern High School in Owings.

Selections in the competition were varied, with Moussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Copland sharing time with Chuck Mangione, Pete Seeger, Lennon and McCartney.

Tournament of Bands is a national organization that promotes band competition. The events involve highly synchronized marching and musical performances. Each band is allowed 14 minutes to present its performance and set up and remove props.

Host band Northern did not compete but performed at the end of the program while scores were compiled.

The bands were judged in groups based on the size of their schools. In Group I -- the smallest schools -- Chesapeake High School in Pasadena took first place, with Lackey High School and Calvert High School placing second and third, respectively.

In Group II, Thomas Stone High School placed first, followed by La Plata, Great Mills and Leonardtown. Arundel High School won in Group III, and Severna Park High School in Group IV.
