Larry Smith rushed for 111 yards and scored on a 63-yard run as Brooke Point shut down host Fauquier, 12-7, in a Commonwealth District battle last night.
Quarterback Jeff Tate rushed for 80 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown after a Fauquier fumble as the Black-Hawks improved to 3-2 and 1-1 in the district.
Fauquier drops to 2-3 and 0-1 in the Commonwealth.
Late in the third quarter, with the Falcons clinging to a 7-6 lead, Fauquier quarterback Michael Stuart dropped back to pass on third and 10 from his 14. Stuart was hit by Brooke Point's Jason Levister in the backfield, fumbled, and the Black-Hawks' Michael Kessler recovered at the Fauquier 5-yard line.
Two plays later, Tate ran the ball in from three yards. The two-point attempt failed, but it didn't matter. At that point Fauquier's offense was struggling so much that a five-point lead would prove to be enough.
"Shoot, they just played a good game," Fauquier senior fullback Eric Bailey said of the Brooke Point defense.
In the early going, it looked like the breaks might go Fauquier's way. Brooke Point fumbled the opening kickoff, and the Falcons recovered at the Black-Hawks' 23-yard line. Four plays later, Stuart scored on a 10-yard keeper.
"It took us awhile to get in a feel for what they were doing," Brooke Point Coach Tom Berry said. "Toward the end of the first half we started doing some things, started making some plays."
In addition to his running, Tate completed three passes for 40 yards and made an interception at the Black-Hawks 35 that ended Fauquier's faint hopes in the final minute.
* POTOMAC 19, OSBOURN 0: Sophomore Gary Price ran for 120 yards and a touchdown and returned a punt 76 yards for another score as Potomac stayed perfect in the Cardinal District.
Potomac John Dominguez got the Panthers on the board in the first quarter with a 30-yard scoring pass to Jesse Williams. Price scored both his touchdowns in the third quarter.
Potomac improves to 3-2, 2-0 in the district. Osbourn falls to 1-4, 0-2.
* GEORGE MASON 36, QUANTICO 26: Senior quarterback Jesse Schenkoske ran 93 yards for a touchdown as the visiting Warriors nearly rallied from a 29-7 deficit against the defending Bull Run District champions.
Jerard Anderson scored twice for Quantico (2-4), which cut George Mason's lead to 29-26 in the fourth quarter before the Mustangs (3-2) put the game away on a five-yard run by Greg Stovall.
Ethan Crouch, an all-Bull Run linebacker last year at Brentsville, scored on a 35-yard run and nine-yard pass play for George Mason.
