Neither Westlake nor St. Mary's Ryken has ever won the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference regular season girls soccer title. But thanks to the hustle of Lindsay Holley and two goals each by Stacey Kimm and Deanna Evans on Tuesday night, the Wolverines are now in prime position to do so.

Westlake defeated St. Mary's Ryken, 6-1, in a battle of the SMAC's top two teams. With the victory, Westlake (6-0-1 overall, 5-0-1 in the SMAC) remained the only undefeated team in the conference. The Wolverines, who have outscored opponents 31-12 this season, have five conference games left.

St. Mary's Ryken (6-2-1, 4-1-1) fell into a tie for second place with Leonardtown. Sophomore forward Suzanne Arata scored the Knights' only goal--her 13th this season--off a somersault throw-in by defender Andrea Grabrelcik.

Arata's goal came in the 16th minute, and gave St. Mary's Ryken a 1-0 lead. She seemed to have a second goal in the bag four minutes later, when she ran into a long pass and blew by the entire Westlake defense.

Holley, a junior midfielder, sprinted from midfield and caught up to Arata six yards from the goal. She stepped in with her right foot and deflected Arata's shot over the end line.

"I just knew it had to be done," said Holley, who lettered in cross-country, indoor track and outdoor track last year for Westlake. "It usually takes just one big play to get this team moving."

Three minutes later, Kimm tied the score on a breakaway. Junior forward Elizabeth Gallacher broke the tie with her team-leading ninth goal of the season with 8 minutes 25 seconds left in the first half.

In the second half, freshman forward Tara Tomasello scored first, then Evans sandwiched her goals around Kimm's second of the evening.

LEONARDTOWN 3, McDONOUGH 2: Senior midfielder Katie Frink scored with eight minutes left in the game to give the Raiders the victory over the visiting Rams. Leonardtowm (4-3-1, 4-1-1) also got goals from junior forward Cyprian Gillingham and junior midfielder Carolyn Matisick. Matisick scored on a header off Frink's corner kick in her second game back after suffering a concussion in a game two weeks ago.
