Woman Found Dead in Office Building
The body of a 24-year-old Sterling woman was discovered yesterday in the stairwell of the Fair Oaks office building where she worked, Fairfax County police said.
Julie Hersey, a police spokeswoman, said detectives were investigating the death as an apparent homicide.
An office building worker discovered the body of Robin J. Kehrer, of the 21800 block of Goldstone Terrace, about 10:30 a.m., police said. Kehrer worked as an information technology professional for a firm in the 3900 block of Fair Ridge Drive.
Police said the cause of death has not been confirmed and would not elaborate. An autopsy is scheduled.
Teacher Charged in Student's Assault
A Fairfax County elementary teacher has been charged with assault after an incident last month involving a student at Hybla Valley Elementary.
Police said Elect A. "Al" Vance, 50, of Rockville, allegedly grabbed a 7-year-old boy by the neck Sept. 20 and forced him to the floor, injuring the boy's arm.
Vance was served Sunday with a warrant for assault and was released on a $250 personal recognizance bond. School officials said Vance has been placed on administrative leave.
Inmate Sexual Abuse to Be Investigated
The state's top public safety official said yesterday that his office will investigate female inmates' complaints of widespread sexual abuse by male guards.
The Associated Press reported that there have been 25 complaints of sexual misconduct by staff members at Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women during the first nine months of 1999. The prison houses more than half of the state's female prisoners.
State Secretary of Public Safety Gary Aronhalt said he will investigate the complaints with the help of the Department of Corrections' inspector general.
Man Fatally Shot on Moped in NE
A man on a moped was shot and killed last night in Northeast Washington, police said.
The man, whose name was not released, was found lying in the road near his moped in the 800 block of H Street NE about 10:45 p.m., police said. He had been shot twice in the back.
Police said they have no suspects.
Man Arraigned in Sexual Assault of Teen
A 22-year-old Northwest Washington man was arraigned last week in connection with the sexual assault of a 15-year-old female in a Northeast park, U.S. Park Police said.
John Hicks, 22, of the 1200 Block of Fifth Street NW, was arrested Oct. 4 and charged with sexually abusing a teenager Aug. 21 in River Terrace Park. Hicks is being held without bail.
