Kiwanis President Inducted

Marcia Porterfield was inducted as president of the Kiwanis Club of Prince George's County on Thursday, becoming the first female president in the community service group's 65-year history.

Porterfield said she wants to continue the social outreach of her 73-member group and emphasize helping children in areas such as iodine deficiency. She also aims to aid in public safety issues, fund-raising for the Salvation Army and putting on productions in conjunction with the Prince George's Publick Playhouse, she said.

Donna Landis, president-elect of Kiwanis and the second female president-to-be, also was inducted at the ceremony at the College Park Best Western.

Annual Chamber Event

The Prince George's County Chamber of Commerce is holding its 19th annual TRADEFEST '99 on Tuesday at Martin's Crosswinds in Greenbelt. The event, featuring the theme "Back to the Future: Customer Service, Marketing and Technology," will include seminars and a trade fair for Prince George's County businesses' products and services. No registration is necessary.

Halloween Fest

Prince George's Plaza will host a Halloween trick-or-treating event from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 30. Characters will be on hand to entertain costumed children in the Center Court, beginning at 6 p.m. For more information, call 301-559-8844.

Pumpkin Decorating

Laurel Mall will host a Pumpkin Decorating event from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Each child who donates a canned food good will receive a pumpkin to decorate for Halloween. All canned goods will benefit the Elizabeth House. In addition, the mall will sponsor a "Trick or Treat" for children from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 30.
