For the third time in four years, the Olney Metro-Stars went undefeated at the Virginia Beach Columbus Day Soccer Tournament Oct. 9-10 in Virginia Beach, Va.
The Metro-Stars, who won the U-17 Red Division title, were one of three Olney Soccer Club teams competing in the tournament. Olney United placed second in the U-12 Red Division and Olney Premier competed in the U-13 Premier Division.
Nine other teams from Montgomery County competed in the tournament, which featured more than 300 boys teams from throughout the country. Bethesda Legend won the U-12 Red Division title with a 3-1 win over Olney United and the Potomac Cougars placed second in the U-14 Premier Division.
The U-10 Potomac Cougars, U-12 Bethesda Raptors, U-13 Olney Premier and U-14 Olney Juniors each competed in the Premier Division and U-11 Bethesda United and U-14 Montgomery SC United competed in the Red Division.
Coach Elton Campbell's Metro-Stars began the tournament with a 4-1 victory over Lafayette Union. Jonathan Bernard (Springbrook), Danny Esteban (Good Counsel), Sammy Loaisiga (Gaithersburg) and Brian Wolcott (Good Counsel) each scored one goal and Patrick Quinn (Good Counsel) made several nice saves.
Olney improved to 2-0 with a 7-0 victory over the Atlantic Hurricane. Bernard and Wolcott each scored two goals Modou Jobareth (Kennedy), Edward Hayden (Magruder) and Sean Young (Good Counsel) each added one. Jeff Chewning (Watkins Mill) had one assist and Shaun Pacious and Paul Smakula played good defense.
The Metro-Stars advanced to the finals with a 2-0 win over the Prince William Olympics, former Virginia State Cup Champions. Erick Jackson (Good Counsel) and John Elder (Sherwood) each scored one goal and Quinn made seven saves in goal. Wolcott and Young also played well.
Olney won the title Oct. 10 with a 3-1 victory over the Stafford (Va.) Spurs. Hayden, Jobareth and Jorge Alvarenga (Gaithersburg) each scored one goal and Pacious, Young and Derrick Campbell (Gaithersburg) played good defense. Bernard and Loaisiga also played well.
