Why should the voters elect you?

"I have served in the office for 7 1/2 years. During that time our office has received numerous statewide awards, citations and commendations. I bring to the office 36 continuous years of government service, 29 of those in Prince William County. My wife and I feel very blessed to live in Prince William County. Our three children were born here. All three have married here. Two of our grandchildren have been born here. I am excited about the potential technology has for our court records and the abilities we will have to make many jobs easier. I look forward to the future. I am proud of the past and I am proud to be a citizen of Prince William County."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"In 1997 and again in 1989, I was chairman of the Prince William County United Way Fund Drive. We set records each year."

Joyce M. Sowards (D)

Age: 57.

Education: Attended Northern Virginia Community College.

Occupation: Owner, J & C Business Services.

Elected offices/civic activities: Fund-raiser, American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association; volunteer, Fairmont Retirement and Assisted Living Community; volunteer, City of Manassas Department of Social Services; member, former secretary and 1994 member of the year, Virginia Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators; Virginia Court Clerks Association.

Family: Married; six children.

Why should the voters elect you?

"I will bring to this position experience and knowledge of the clerk's office. I can determine what areas of the office need improvements, implement those improvements and provide the necessary guidance to the staff to improve their confidence in performing their duties, thereby increasing morale and efficiency. Employees will be hired based on qualifications. Historical records will be maintained and preserved. The office will be modernized in all aspects. I will work with professionals, government agencies and the public to make the office user-friendly and to instill confidence in the judicial system."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"I am a 37-year resident of Prince William County and have a 26-year career in public service in the Circuit Court Clerk's Office. I know how to do the job."
