Why should the voters elect you?

"I will be third in Senate seniority. For the past eight years, I have served as chairman of the Committee on Commerce and Labor and as a budget conferee. As a budget conferee, I have directed millions of dollars to Northern Virginia for transportation, construction of George Mason University in Prince William County and additional buildings at both of our community colleges and improvements to many historical structures. During my 24 years in the Senate, I have introduced 278 bills and resolutions which have passed. Citizens of the 29th Senatorial District have invested 24 years in my Senate seniority--they should retain it."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"A 1999 poll was conducted by the Virginia Foundation for Research and Economic Education Inc. on effectiveness. I received the Senate's third highest score."

Robert S. FitzSimmonds III (R)

Age: 47.

Residence: Manassas.

Education: BA, history, Ashbury College.

Occupation: Administrator, SLM Pregnancy Help Center.

Elected offices/civic activities: Former board member, Crisis Pregnancy Center of Manassas; former Steering Committee member, Partners in Prevention; former Outreach Committee member, Christ the Redeemer Episcopal Church.

Family: Married; four children.

Why should the voters elect you?

"The challenges facing Virginia require leadership and a willingness to break with the past. I will work with the new Republican legislative majority to improve Virginia's educational system. Standards of Learning and school choice set measurable goals and give parents the right to select the best educational option for their child. I will work to see that, in the future, the Prince William area receives its fair share of transportation funding dollars without raising taxes. I will work hard to see the full implementation of the car tax cut and the cut on state sales tax."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"I have pledged to not raise your taxes and will work to keep state government costs down by controlling pork barrel spending and waste."
