Vote for One

Katherine K. 'Kate' Hanley (D)*

Age: 56.

Residence: Merrifield.

Education: BA, BS, University of Missouri; Master of Arts in Teaching, Harvard University.

Occupation: Chairman, Board of Supervisors.

Elected offices/civic activities: Supervisor since 1986; chairman, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro); vice chairman, Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee; executive committee member, Fairfax-Falls Church United Way; former member, Fairfax County School Board.

Family: Married; two children.

Why should the voters elect you?

"My record shows I deliver on my promises. Under my leadership, the board eliminated a $237 million deficit projected for the fiscal year 1999; increased the percentage of the budget for schools; established an environmental coordinator; expanded transit; obtained funding for Fairfax County Parkway completion; allocated funds to preserve open space; continued my initiative to reduce youth violence. I will continue working to extend rail to Dulles and Centreville and provide transportation options for senior citizens. Unlike one opponent, I support prohibiting guns in teen centers. Unlike another, I support School Age Child Care programs and using bonds for school construction to reduce use of trailers."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"Public education remains my top priority. Fairfax public schools must be safe, with excellent teachers, providing opportunity for all to compete in the global economy."

Paul E. Gagnon (Libertarian)

Age: 45.

Residence: Franconia.

Education: BS, Chapman College; MS, George Mason University.

Occupation: Conflict resolution; mediator and co-owner, Gagnon Training and Development and Conflict Management.

Elected offices/civic activities: Chairman, Lee District Land Use and Transportation Advisory Committee; former member, Fairfax County Organ and Tissue Transplantation Committee; 1999 second vice chairman, Lee District Council of Civic and Homeowners Associations; former vice president, Fairfax County Taxpayers' Alliance; former member, Fairfax County Government Building Budget Oversight Committee.

Family: Married.

Why should the voters elect you?

"I will fight to lower the tax rate on buildings. This will reduce the average homeowners' tax bill, reduce rent and make developers pay their fair share. It will reduce urban sprawl and encourage revitalization. I will work for an adequate public facilities ordinance, low-cost mass transit and development impact fees to discourage chaotic growth. I advocate an incentive plan for student transfers to nongovernment schools, getting the children out of trailers immediately and freeing up more revenues for the classroom. Religious beliefs should not be promoted in public schools. I support tax rebates for not using public services."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"I believe our future is bright with possibilities. I offer an innovative plan to embrace this future, leaving behind the failed policies of the past."

C.W. 'Levi' Levy (I)

Age: 67.

Residence: Fairfax.

Education: AA, Northern Virginia Community College; BA, George Mason University.

Occupation: Publisher, Levite Chronicle newspaper.

Elected offices/civic activities: None.

Family: Single.

Why should the voters elect you?

"Kate Hanley's chairman of the county board. To spend more of your taxes, Kate stays up quite late. Vote Levi Levy. Get rid of Kate."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"I have taken a stand for affirmative action, for health care for children of illegal aliens and for free grants for two years of computer training at local community colleges for anyone able to pass a basic algebra examination. I am against all types of illegal drugs and have never tried marijuana or cocaine, and I do not trust anyone who has control of the atomic retaliation button who has [tried them] in his younger day."

Arthur G. Purves (I)

Age: 50.

Residence: Vienna.

Education: BA, MS, MBA, University of Pennsylvania.

Occupation: Computer programmer, General Dynamics.

Elected offices/civic activities: President, Fairfax County Taxpayers Alliance; member, Technical Studies Advisory Committee, Fairfax County public schools; former member, Fairfax Framework for Student Success and Family Life Education advisory committees, Fairfax County public schools; former president, Thomas Jefferson High School Crew Boosters.

Family: Married; two children.

Why should the voters elect you?

"Vote Purves to build the Dulles Metro and end school overcrowding by 2010, without tax increases and without borrowing. Kate Hanley has and will raise taxes. The Democrats' record is higher taxes, crowded roads, crowded schools and a 30-point minority-student achievement gap. The tax increases of the 1980s already provide an extra $900 million per year. Real spending per student doubled, yet the average SAT score--65th percentile--did not improve. School failure and moral breakdown, especially fatherless children, have caused law enforcement and welfare spending to soar. The key to lower taxes is high moral values."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"Schools were safe before the Supreme Court prohibited the Ten Commandments and organized prayer. Ending traffic congestion requires high-density zoning along rail lines."
