Penelope A. 'Penny' Gross (D)*

Age: 55.

Residence: Falls Church.

Education: BS, University of Oregon.

Occupation: Mason District Supervisor (since 1995).

Elected offices/civic activities: Founder, Friends of Mason District Park; Lincolnia Park Civic Association; Fairfax County Council of PTAs; 20 years of Capitol Hill experience.

Why should the voters elect you?

"The Mason District deserves full-time, active representation and leadership that listens. That is what I promised when I ran in 1995, and I have kept those commitments. I never quit. The progress made during my first term--in revitalization, education and prudent management of taxpayer dollars--provides a strong framework for meeting the challenges ahead: finding transportation solutions for the region, enhancing public education with the best and brightest teachers in safe and up-to-date schools and making government more responsive to the people."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"I love my job and work hard at it. Accessibility, integrity and open, honest communication with constituents are the hallmarks of my office."

Stephen L. Lawrence (I)

Age: 52.

Residence: Annandale.

Education: BS, accounting, David N. Myers College.

Occupation: Bus operator, Alexandria Transit Co. (DASH).

Elected offices/civic activities: Former president, Annandale Lions Club; 1974 Worshipful Master of Masonic Lodge.

Family: Married; one child.

Why should the voters elect you?

"A lifelong resident of Northern Virginia--and Fairfax County since 1954--I am aware of how badly we are choking on the lack of mass transportation that is both affordable and accessible. In addition to improving our roads, I would support and work toward improved transit and rail. I would devote time and work with others in improving our county school system. I am big on volunteering."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"The ParcFairfax Community and Old Town Alexandria are two examples where transit service is affordable and accessible seven days a week. Come to Annandale and try to ride a bus on Sunday. It is not available on Little River Turnpike."

Christine R. 'Tina' Trapnell (R)

Age: 54.

Residence: Falls Church.

Education: BS, foreign service, Georgetown University.

Occupation: None.

Elected offices/civic activities: Mason District supervisor (1992-1996); administrative assistant to Mason District supervisor (1984-91).

Family: Married; two children.

Why should the voters elect you?

"Eleven years of experience in the Mason District office as an administrative assistant and as supervisor plus a solid record of accomplishment--the Lincolnia Senior Center, the George Mason Library renovation, the J.E.B. Stuart I.B. program and the Mason District Farmers Market--is the basis of my platform. Of equal importance are my 25 years of continuous community involvement, from serving as chairman of the Mason District District Council to community service director of my Rotary club. Fairfax County is a good place to live and work. It can be an even better place. Working together we can achieve that objective."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"I have lived in Northern Virginia most of my life. My interest is the well-being of my community and all of its residents."
