Why should the voters elect you?

"As a parent of three children in Fairfax County public schools and a fourth who just graduated from Langley High School, I have firsthand experience with the needs of our schools. I will work hard to ensure that the schools in Dranesville District will get their equitable share of the funds needed to expedite renovations and eliminate the use of trailers. I also intend to focus--although we have good schools--on closing the performance gap among the individual schools and to ensure the continuation of music and art programs."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"I represented U.S. corporations overseas and was exposed to different cultures. I recognize the importance of preparing our students to compete in the global economy."

Age: 52.

Residence: McLean.

Education: BA, history, George Washington University; MAT, Harvard University.

Occupation: Community activist and former teacher.

Elected offices/civic activities: Dranesville District board member and board budget chairman since 1995; at-large School Board member, 1991-1993; board chairman, Country Day School; former president, budget chairman and education chairman, Fairfax County Council PTAs; 1993 co-chairman, School Bond Campaign.

Family: Married; four children.

Why should the voters elect you?

"As a school board member, I will help students gain the skills needed to compete in a global high-tech economy and become good citizens. In the last four years, my board colleagues and I have raised academic standards, set measurable targets for improved student achievement and strengthened reading programs, including phonics. We have made character education a priority, increased classroom time for 'at-risk' students, dramatically enhanced the use of technology and required high schools to offer the rigorous international baccalaureate or the Advanced Placement diploma programs. We also secured more funding for school construction and renovation."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"I have spent 25 years working with all kinds of students, from preschool on up, in both urban and suburban settings."
