Why should the voters elect you?

"In the scheme of public education, experience and understanding of issues vital to carry on new programs and programs in progress are the key to improving the public school system. With changes occurring in Fauquier County, my previous experience and service on the board will lend continuity to taking us forward. As an advocate for children, the ultimate function in all board actions should be to establish policy and hire the most competent educators to run our school system. With teaching as my background, experience has added depth to working with the educational system. A vote for me guarantees service to children first."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"During my years on the School Board, my major concern has been excellence in education for every student. Putting children first is what is critical for the future."

William G. Downey IV

Age: 39.

Residence: New Baltimore.

Education: BS, construction management, Syracuse University.

Occupation: Cost engineer and partner, Forella Associates.

Elected offices/civic activities: Vice chairman, New Baltimore Planning Committee; former officer, Concerned Citizens of New Baltimore; member, 1998 redistricting committee, Fauquier County public schools; member, Fauquier Habitat for Humanity.

Family: Married; two children.

Why should the voters elect you?

"I offer a clear difference to the voters than does my opponent. I want to spend more money in the classrooms. My opponent spends money on creating a bureaucratic 'top-heavy' main office. I am beholden to no one. My opponent has wasted limited funds on pet projects. I will question unnecessary spending, and I will increase teacher salaries. I will be an advocate for teachers, parents and children."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"I am a planner. I bring to the table an analytical approach to problem solving and take responsibility for complex challenges. I am persistent and focused."
