James G. 'Jim' Kelly (I)

Age: 35.

Residence: Sterling.

Education: High school graduate.

Occupation: Customer service supervisor, Airbus Service Co.

Elected offices/civic activities: Appointee, Loudoun County Transportation Safety Commission.

Family: Married; two children.

Why should the voters elect you?

"For the past 3 1/2 years, I have been fighting to dramatically slow the excessive rate of development which is steadily deteriorating our quality of life. The York initiatives have been completely ineffective in achieving this goal. I have been pushing for much deeper reductions along with other citizen-activist candidates. Unfortunately, Mr. York and his allies have chosen to ignore the very people they were elected to serve. If elected, I will take measures to appropriately slow the rate of residential development with the goal of steadily improving our quality of life."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"I will not compromise my integrity for campaign dollars or ideal campaign sign locations. Make a visit to my Web page--it's worth the trip."

Dale Polen Myers (I)*

Age: 43.

Residence: Ashburn.

Education: AS, respiratory therapy, Northern Virginia Community College.

Occupation: Chairman, Board of Supervisors.

Elected offices/civic activities: Vice chairman, board of directors, Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments; gubernatorial appointee, Scenic Open Space Advisory Board; former chairman, Loudoun County Planning Commission; 1998 board member, Babe Ruth World Series.

Family: Married; two children.

Why should the voters elect you?

"When I was elected chairman, Loudoun County was faced with the issue that there were over 50,000 homes approved to be built. There was almost no commercial tax base. Loudoun was a bedroom community providing the housing for the Fairfax employer while receiving none of the jobs. As chairman, I have focused on smart growth. The economic development created has accounted for over $30,000,000 in revenues to Loudoun County. This has saved the average taxpayer $508. Over 70 percent of the additional revenue has gone to public education with classroom size now back to where it was in 1995."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"I am a native to Loudoun County, mother of two children and a volunteer in our community. I am proud to be a public servant."

Family: Married; four children.

Why should the voters elect you?

"Our future is too important to stand flat-footed waiting for it to happen. By taking the initiative, we can make the 21st century Loudoun's best. I have been recognized throughout the county, state and country for my leadership dealing with smart growth. My leadership, experience and vision for our county is what led to my winning the Republican nomination with 73 percent of the vote. As chairman, I will continue my efforts to manage the pace of residential growth and see that developers pay their fair share for cost of schools, roads and other infrastructure."

What would you like voters to know about you?

"My initiatives eliminated over 80,000 planned residential units, doubled developer proffers and led to the formation of a statewide coalition working together on smart-growth issues."
