Sophomore Angela Clanford scored in the second overtime as Northern's field hockey team handed Southern Maryland Athletic Conference champion Leonardtown its first loss of the season in Friday's Maryland 3A South regional quarterfinals.

Leonardtown (12-1-1) scored early, but the Patriots tied the game on a penalty corner taken with no time left in the first half.

Northern, a state semifinalist last season, will face the winner of Friday's La Plata-Chopticon game in Tuesday's regional semifinals.

On Thursday, Calvert advanced to the field hockey semifinals with a 2-0 victory over host Westlake. The Cavaliers (12-0-2) got a stellar performance from goalkeeper Rachel Clagett, who made two key saves in the first half.

Calvert will play at McDonough--which defeated Patuxent, 2-1, on Thursday--in Tuesday's semifinals.

Girls Soccer

Sophomore sweeper Stephanie Starkey scored her first goal of the season with five minutes left in the second overtime to allow McDonough to defeat Calvert, 4-3, Friday in a Maryland 3A South Region first-round game.

On the decisive play, sweeper Jackie Curry stopped a potential breakaway by the Cavaliers and fed the ball up to junior forward Julia Lufriu, who took it toward the goal before passing to Starkey.

"Even when we were down, 3-2, I did not picture us losing," McDonough Coach Jerry Curry said. "The girls were just too intense, and I could tell they did not want to lose."

Lufriu finished with two goals and an assist, and junior center midfielders Rachel McNally and Amy Massy also recorded assists.

In another first-round game, La Plata defeated Chopticon, 3-0, on Thursday. The Warriors will play at Thomas Stone in the first half of a doubleheader Tuesday.

Boys Soccer

La Plata's boys soccer team advanced to the 3A South quarterfinals with a 2-0 victory over Chopticon on Thursday. After a scoreless first half, Warriors senior forward Josh Parrot scored on a pass from freshman Robbie Day with 20 minutes left.

Day was the catalyst in the Warriors' other goal, scrambling for and winning a loose ball in front of the goal late in the game. Day sent the ball about 25 yards back out to junior Adam Metz, who fired a hard shot that hit the inside post and bounced in to secure the win.

La Plata will play at Thomas Stone, the defending Maryland 3A state co-champions, on Tuesday.
