Sophomore forward Ryan Olsen scored two goals Monday to lead the St. Mary's men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Catholic University in a Capital Athletic Conference quarterfinal. The Seahawks (9-9) will play at second-seeded Salisbury State at 2 p.m. today in the semifinals.
Olsen got St. Mary's started with an assist in the 13th minute, then doubled the third-seeded Seahawks' lead with a goal seven minutes later. Catholic (11-7) made it 2-1 on a second-half penalty kick, but Olsen put the game out of reach with a 25-yard free kick in the 58th minute.
Salisbury State defeated St. Mary's, 3-0, on Oct. 6 in the teams' only meeting this year. . . .
The St. Mary's women's team suffered a surprising 2-1 loss to Goucher in the first round of the CAC tournament on Oct. 25. The Seahawks finished the season 11-4-1, winning 10 or more games for the third consecutive season. Mary Washington won the tournament and moved on to the NCAA Division III tournament.
Charles Season Ends
The Charles County Community College women's soccer team's remarkable season came to an end with a 4-3 overtime loss to Essex in the first round of the Region XX tournament last Thursday. Freshman Valerie Raby (Westlake) scored two goals and assisted on a goal by Katie Wechsler (Thomas Stone) to turn a 2-0 Essex lead into a 3-2 Charles County advantage. But the Hawks faltered in the closing minutes and lost nine minutes into overtime.
"We had one sub, and they had four. That's hurt us all year long," said Charles Coach Bill Ellin, whose team finished at 8-9-1. "When you look at how we started the year, I think there was some gratification with how we played."
Hockey Team Loses
The St. Mary's field hockey team closed out a disappointing year with an 8-1 loss to York in the first round of the CAC tournament on Oct. 25. Freshman Gretta Campbell's goal with just over 14 minutes left in the match was her team-leading third of the season.
