Pedestrian, 75, Injured in Silver Spring

A 75-year-old Montgomery County man was critically injured yesterday when he was struck by a car as he tried to cross a busy intersection in Silver Spring, police said.

Robert Teng, of the 10900 block of Inwood Avenue in Silver Spring, was trying to cross University Boulevard at Gable Street about 8:30 a.m. when a 1989 Honda Accord turned onto Gable Street as Teng stepped into the intersection. The car's driver, Piero Gonzalez, 27, of the 10900 block of Amherst Avenue in Wheaton, swerved to avoid Teng but hit a 1990 Mitsubishi and then struck Teng.

Teng was taken by state police helicopter to Suburban Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Gonzalez was not injured and was wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred, police said.

Investigators said speed and alcohol were not factors. The Mitsubishi's driver was not injured, police said.
