Running back Gary Ham, wide receiver Victor Horne and strong safety Roy Purdie each scored a pair of touchdowns as the Virginia Monarchs closed out the regular season Saturday with a 69-0 victory over the Harlem Hurricanes at Pfitzner Stadium.

The Monarchs (16-1, 10-0 in United Football League) held the Hurricanes to minus-36 yards of total offense.

Purdie scored on a 30-yard interception return and returned a fumble 11 yards for another score. Linebacker Marco White had three sacks as the team raised its sack total to 174 for the year, led by Kenny Conrad (31), White (30) and James Dixon (30).

On offense, Ham scored on an 18-yard run and returned a fumble 28 yards for another touchdown. Horne's touchdown receptions came on passes of 27 yards and 30 yards by quarterback Jamie Davis, who also hit tight end Andre Grasty for a score.

Running backs Tony Pearson (40-yard run), Charles "Moose" Carter (45-yarder) and Steve Wilowby (17-yarder) rounded out the scoring.

Place-kicker Walt Willis hit 9 of 10 extra points, bringing his season points total to 108.

The Monarchs will play a first-round playoff game against the King George Kodiaks or Maryland Cougars at 7 p.m. Nov. 20 at Pfitzner Stadium.
