Alexandria Joins Civil War Trails

Alexandria has become a member of the Virginia Civil War Trails, a statewide program that highlights and links Civil War sites in Virginia for tourists, residents and history buffs.

The program was started in 1992 in Petersburg and today has 250 sites across the state, including locations in Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Fauquier and Prince William counties.

Alexandria has a significant Civil War history, having served a critical role as a Union-occupied transportation and medical center during the war. More than 70 locations within the city have historic Civil War significance, including Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site and the Alexandria National Cemetery.
