Grant to Provide Housing

A Housing and Urban Development grant awarded to two Columbia nonprofit organizations last month will be used to provide affordable housing for low-income seniors and people with disabilities. Columbia Housing Corporation and Developmental Services Group will use the $782,700 allocation to purchase and rehabilitate three homes for nine Columbia residents.

Columbia Housing Corporation owns and/or manages 25 group residences for 56 mentally or physically disabled residents in the Columbia area.

Developmental Services Group provides vocational, residential, outpatient mental health and psychiatric rehabilitation services in Howard County. The funding is from the HUD 811 grant program and will provide rental assistance subsidies to families.

New Reservation System

Beginning Jan. 3, a new system for reserving Howard County Park pavilions goes into effect, enabling Howard and out-of-county residents to make rental reservations for up to one year in advance. Reservations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Parks and recreation officials describe the new system as "a whole lot easier" than the lottery system it replaces.
