Quantico

* Coach: Keith Mesa (first year).

* Last season: 4-20.

* Returning starters/letter winners: 4/5.

The Warriors have gotten off to a slow start and fast start all at the same time. They have gone 3-0, but have trailed Delaney Athletic Conference opponents Notre Dame Academy and Emmanuel Christian in the fourth quarter before pulling out wins.

Guards Keon Williams and Larry McCleod (5.1 ppg) and forwards James Donovan (5.6 ppg) and Peter Charboneau (7.8 ppg) return from last year, and sophomore Josey Schenkoske recently played his way into the starting lineup.

McCleod, a surprisingly effective rebounder for his size, has poured in 55 points the first three games, and point guard Williams can score as well as dish.

The Warriors already are settling scores, at least against rebuilding teams. They have beaten Emmanuel Christian, which walloped them by 45 and 44 points last season, and they have edged Manassas Park, which handled Quantico by 17 and 18 points in 1998-99.

* Coach: Dan VanderWoude (seventh year).

* Last season: 28-5.

* Returning starters/letter winners: 3/5.

Before the season, much of the talk about Seton centered on who was not there--graduated All-Extra center Matt Hilleary--instead of the three returning starters. But even without Hilleary's formidable inside presence, the Conquistadors are still plenty capable, as their 4-1 start attests.

Point guard Pat VanderWoude (9.8 ppg), the coach's brother, returns as a more seasoned distributor who also has become a greater offensive threat. Guard Josh Daniel (8.0 ppg) evolved into a frequent double-figure scorer toward the end of last season. And swingman Brian Lalli (7.1 ppg) is back with the team after attending Bishop Ireton in Alexandria this fall.

All three had a hand in the Manassas school's unbeaten Delaney Athletic Conference record last season. Much of this month will be spent mixing and matching different combinations.

"We can't go to the same person inside like last year and expect to get points when we need it," Dan VanderWoude said. "I see playing up to as many as 10 guys."

* Coach: Allan Edgar (10th year).

* Last season: 18-7.

* Returning starters/letter winners: 0/3.

The Flames, a Delaney Athletic Conference semifinalist last season, graduated more players (nine) than are currently on the roster (eight). In fact, there are only five boys in the entire senior class of the Manassas school.

So Emmanuel will need to squeeze quality out of lack of quantity. Point guard Gary Williams, who averaged 14 points as the sixth man last year, has shown the ability to step in and be a major contributor. But he will need help from holdovers Matt Pophin (5.5 ppg) and David Lauer (3.3 ppg) and a boost from the junior varsity call-ups.

"Even though we have four seniors, we're still really short on experience and depth," said Edgar, whose team is off to a 1-5 start. "But the guys have a good attitude and they want to learn and they want to work. The second part of the season, I think we may pose problems."

* Coach: Jim Fisher (fifth year).

* Last season: 21-5.

* Returning starters/letter winners: 3/5. If Evangel has a team to match the quality of its home schedule, it could be a fun season. The Dale City school will host the Old Dominion Association of Christian Schools State Tournament and the Mid East Region American Association of Christian Schools Tournament.

Evangel was an ODACS semifinalist last season and won the regional tournament.

The Eagles, off to a 3-0 start, welcomed back guard Jeremy Levesque, the Prince William area's leading scorer in 1998-99 at 21 points per game. In the first two games this season, it has not been Levesque that has led the team in scoring but junior forward Kenny Leatch.

Guard Jon Levesque is the third returning starter. Senior guard Josh Owens enhances a small, quick lineup Fisher fancies as one of his better passing outfits.

Evangel has gone 77-21 the past four seasons.

* Coach: Mike Perham (fifth year).

* Last season: 11-7.

* Returning starters/letter winners: 4/6.

The Patriots enhanced their returning talent with the arrival of two transfers who have worked their way into the starting lineup.

Returning are Tim Creed, Ben Hastings and Josiah Mendoza. Creed is a fine distributor, Hastings has developed an inside shot and Mendoza is perhaps the team's top rebounder.

Transfer guards Mike Wolfe (Fairfax Baptist) and James Morgan (Engleside Christian in Alexandria) should be major contributors. The team's top scorer last season, Seth Perdue, also had transferred to Heritage before his senior year.

"There's a lot of individual talent," said Perham, who believes his challenge is to turn the Patriots into a cohesive unit.

Shooting has been a concern for Heritage, which is 2-2 so far this season. The Woodbridge school, which competes in the Old Dominion Association of Christian Schools, canned just 27 percent of its shots in one outing this season.
