Seton

* Coach: Dick Pennefather (13th year).

* Last season: 19-7.

* Returning starters/letter winners: 4/6.

With four starters back, the Conquistadors are not likely to miss a beat as they shoot for their 12th Delaney Athletic Conference title in 13 years. Only one of those returning four--forward Melanie Jones--is a senior.

Point guard Mary Spicer, guard Katy Hadro and forward Elena Jones are the other returning starters. Hadro, who looked for her outside shot last year, has reverted to her old style of attacking the basket. She averaged 11.7 points in 1998-99. Spicer averaged 7.8.

Seton is not a tall team, particularly with 6-2 Ellen Flannery unavailable early in the season because of an ankle injury and illness.

Also unavailable, at least in Delaney games, is seventh-grade point guard Jessica Spicer, Mary's cousin, who has drawn raves from Pennefather. The Delaney does not allow seventh-graders to play on the varsity in league games. So the young Spicer will play in the non-conference games, which generally are against tougher competition, and would be eligible to compete in the Virginia Independent Schools state tournament.

"I probably feel more comfortable when she has the ball than with any player on the team," Pennefather said.

* Returning starters/letter winners: 1/5.

The Warriors will try to emphasize an inside game with Sarah Martin and Tara Bell but will need Kandance Carver and Mandy Wolfe to shoot over the zones Thomas expects to see in the Delaney Athletic Conference.

Thomas, who has been a softball and junior varsity boys basketball assistant the school, has no trouble naming his team's main asset.

"Sarah is our strength," he said. "She carries us quite a bit."

Martin, who also can move her game away from the basket, averaged 11.5 points last season.

Point guard Michelle Burgess (4.1 ppg last year) is the lone senior starter.

* Coach: Greg Lambert (10th year).

* Last season: 15-7.

* Returning starters/letter winners: 3/5.

A robust returning cast and a key transfer has the Eagles thinking they can match their stellar record of a season ago.

Janette Freitas, who averaged about 14 points per game last year, has returned along with starters Cari Baillargeon and Megan James. North Stafford transfer Staci Lingo, at 5-8, is the Dale City school's second-tallest player.

The Eagles, who compete in the Old Dominion Association of Christian Schools, are pleased with their team speed and depth.

"Last year was probably our best season ever, and this year we should be able to top that," Lambert said.

* Coach: Jeff Adams (third year).

* Last year: 8-10.

* Returning starters/letter winners: 4/7.

The Flames not only return four starters of their own, they have added senior guard Kathy Colgain, a regular on the Evangel Christian team last season.

Eight of Emmanuel's 10 players are seniors, led by returning starters Kierra Culpeper, Megan Patrick, Carrie Frasz and Kasey Crotty. Katie Hoyt, one of the juniors, has cracked the starting lineup.

Patrick has scored 23 points in a game this season, and Culpeper averaged 15 points a year ago for the Manassas school, which competes in the Delaney Athletic Conference.

Despite the returning talent and relatively high expectations, the Flames dropped their first three games. Worse yet, Adams believes they were outhustled in those games.

"We have the experience, we just have to prove it on the court," he said.

* Coach: Rick Carr (first year).

* Returning starters/letter winners: 3/8.

Carr, formerly the junior varsity boys coach at the Woodbridge school, inherits an experienced team with decent size.

The three returning starters are Tracy Furr, Mandy Green and point guard Sarah White. Green is averaging about 14 points and six assists this season, and Furr is pulling in a dozen rebounds per outing.

Carr likes his team's unselfishness and passing ability. The Patriots are 2-3 on the season.

"They're capable of being competitive with any team they play with," Carr said. "They've been playing for a long time."
