Even without star Rico Lloyd, the Potomac boys indoor track team proved it is going to be tough this year.

Senior Jason Lewis won the mile and ran on the winning 4x800 and sprint medley relays to lead the Panthers to the boys team title at the Walt Cormack Relays over the weekend at VMI in Lexington, Va.

"Everyone thinks that without Rico we aren't anything," Potomac Coach Bill Stearns said. "But we have a few surprises."

The Dumfries school won the 36-team meet with 51 1/2 points. Petersburg was second with 45. Lloyd, who is nursing an ankle injury suffered during the football season, sat out the meet. He returned to practice Monday.

Gar-Field All-Met senior Sheena Johnson won the triple jump and 55-meter hurdles to lead the Indians to the girls team title. Takeitha Jordan (high jump) and Latetia Walker (shot put) also won events for Gar-Field, which captured the 4x400 and 4x800 relays as well and finished with 101 points. Brooke Point was second with 49 points. For Potomac's boys team, three athletes made impressive debuts in their first full indoor track seasons:

Senior Phil Arellano, who plays center field on the baseball team, led off the winning sprint medley and ran on the 4x400 relay.

Sophomore Jesse Williams, a wide receiver on the football team, tied for fifth on the high jump, was eighth in the long jump and ran on the 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams.

Junior Gerrell McNeil ran on the winning sprint medley, was second in the long jump, eighth in the 55 dash and ran on the 4x200 relay team.

Other area winners were Brooke Point's Colleen Connell (1,600) and Stonewall Jackson's Frank Tolen (long jump).
