BOYS

Friday

Eleanor Roosevelt at Oxon Hill, 7:15 p.m.

An intriguing matchup of two of the top 4A teams in the county: Roosevelt has been inconsistent, with key players in and out of the lineup. Oxon Hill has started strong, with big wins over Newport School and Central. Roosevelt senior guard Delonte Holland was suspended indefinitely from the team last week for violating team rules.

Tuesday

Gwynn Park at Central, 7:15 p.m.

Five-time county champion Central is the established power in the 2A/1A league; Gwynn Park, which moved down from 3A, is the challenger. The teams advanced to the state semifinals at Cole Field House last year in their respective classifications (Central lost to Dunbar in the 2A semifinals, Gwynn Park lost to Thomas Johnson in the 3A final). Sherrod Ford, a 6-foot-9 senior forward, has blocked 21 shots in Gwynn Park's first three games. Central's Sean Brooks, a 6-6 senior forward, averages 18.3 points per game.

GIRLS

Friday

DuVal at Riverdale Baptist, 7 p.m.

The Crusaders won their first five games by a combined score of 576-147. However, the victories came against teams with losing records. Riverdale will be challenged by DuVal, the defending 3A state champion. The Tigers have had time to prepare; they have not played since a season-opening 65-27 win over Roosevelt on Dec. 7.

Six Division I signees will be on the court: Riverdale Baptist seniors Joi Jefferson (Northeastern), Vickie Briscoe (Colgate) and Jennifer Baker (Long Beach); DuVal seniors Chinny Nwagbo (Syracuse), Vernessa Neamo (George Mason) and Yolanda Jefferson (UMBC).

Tuesday

Largo at Oxon Hill, 7:15 p.m.

Each team has one of the area's best all-around players (Largo has Candace Sutton; Oxon Hill has Rebekkah Brunson) and each team is much more than a one-woman show. Oxon Hill guards Charetta Oliver and Jesthela "Jet" Lopez have been shooting well from the outside, taking the pressure off of Brunson. Largo seniors Andrea House, Tamara Barnes and Adrienne Harris led the Lions to two victories while Sutton played sparingly because of a sprained right ankle.

CAPTION: Westlake's Tim Bonnett, left, has shot swatted away by Crossland's Marco Lomax during Tuesday's game.

CAPTION: Gwynn Park sophomore Charmaine Carr shoots over Northern's Katie Manley.
